텍사스에서 자원활동 중인 송영선씨의 소식입니다:

2월 26일 화요일

어제 12시 반쯤 휴스톤에 도착했다. 피곤했지만 바로 잠들지 못하고… 씨엔엔 재방송을 봤다. 아침에 8시쯤 일어나서 모텔에서 제공하는 시리얼을 먹고, 오늘 일정을 정리했다. 우리 웹사이트를 보고 연락한 손인철 변호사를 맨 처음 코마트 앞에서 만나기로 했다. 시민 연합회 조성호 회장님과 12시에 만나기로 했고, 3시에 주간지 코리아 월드 발행인인 정지윤씨와 만나기로 했다.

코마트에서 만난 손인철씨는 1.5세라고 하는데, 우리말을 썩 잘했다. 손인철씨로부터 다시 한번 휴스톤에 사는 한인들이 얼마나 보수적인지에 대해 다시 한번 들었다. 휴스톤에서의 전략은 한인 단체를 만나는 것 보다는 언론을 통해, 우리가 방문한 목적과 오바마 의원을 지지해야하는 당위성에 대해 설명하는 게 더 낫다는 말씀을 해주셨다. 코마트에서 발견한 또 다른 주간지 스포츠 위클리를 무작정 집어들고, 전화를 했더니, 마침 그 동네라면서 10분 후에 만나기로 했다.

뉴스 위클리의 발행인은 기자답게 날카로운 질문을 많이 하셨다. 이번 토요일에 한인들이 주축이 된 아태계 오바마 지지자들이 오바마 의원을 알리기 위한 행사가 있어서 안 그래도 기사를 써달라는 요청을 받았다는 말씀을 하셨다. 알고보니, 휴스톤 출신의 모니카 윤 이라는 예일대 출신의 변호사가 다른 아태계 오바마 후원자들과 함께 연설을 계획했는데, 부모님이 휴스톤 한인 커뮤니티에서 꽤 알려진 분들이라 연락을 미리 다 해놓으신 상태였다. 아무튼 방문 기사를 써주시기로 하고, 다음 약속 장소로 떠났다. 휴스톤에 있는 한국일보 지사에 들려서 오늘 신문을 봤는데, 우리 기사가 일면에 나와있었다. 와우… 예… 힘이 나서 주변에 있는 10여개의 한인 상가에 전단지를 나눠주고, 말씀을 나눴다. 어떤 분들은 오바마에 대해서 전혀 모르시는 분도 계셨고, 원래는 공화당 지지자였는데, 이번 선거는 정책을 보고 오바마와 힐러리 중에 심각하게 고려하신다는 분도 계셨다. We had a very successful press conference on Wed Feb 28th. Total 9 media outlets showed up including two daily newspapers, 6 weekly newspapers, and one radio station.

The Korea times placed an article about us in the front page on Tuesday already.

At the press conference, the first half, about 20 minutes, we introduced ka4obama such as how it started, and where/how many we have supporters are, and as big groups what we�re going to do, and as small delegation, what kind of goals we are trying to achieve. Feb 25, Monday

We arrived at the motel around the midnight in Dalls, TX yesterday. We watched little bit of CNN rerun of Obama/Clinton debate from last Thursday. We set up alarm at 7am, but DJ wouldn’t get up for a while, probably because of jet leg. luckily, DJ asked some people, and we were able to eat hot breakfast. while we were having breakfast, we also called people to confirm the meetings today Young Sun called Senior association, DJ to InChul Shon in Houston, and Chaegu to Korea times. 저는 도산 안창호 선생의 딸로 어릴 적부터 정부와 정책, 민주주의에 관한 토론을 자연스럽게 나누는 한인 가정에서 성장 했습니다. 후에 저는 미 해군 역사상 최초의 아시안 여사관이 되었고, 국가 안보국에서 암호 해독관으로 수년간 일하기도 했습니다. 하지만 제가 미국 대통령 선거에 관한 제 의견을 밝히는 것은 이번이 처음입니다.

현재, 우리는 전쟁과 경제침체, 의료보험 없이 살아 가는 수 백 만 명의 시민들, 그리고 갈수록 심각해 지는 환경 문제 등 수 많은 문제들에 직면해 있으면서도 우리의 정치 지도자들은 분열되어 싸우기만 하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 우리를 직면하고 있는 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 민주당, 공화당, 무소속을 포함, 모든 미국인을 하나로 단결하게 할 수 있는 지도자가 필요합니다. Read the rest of this entry »

Susan Ahn Cuddy, a daughter of Dosan Ahn Chang HoAs the daughter of Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, I grew up in a Korean-American household where there was much discussion of government, politics and democracy. Later, I was the first female Asian-American officer in the United States Navy. I also worked for the government for many years as a codebreaker for the National Security Agency. However, I have never been moved to speak out in a U.S. presidential campaign � until now.Today, we are at war, our economy is struggling, millions of people don�t have health care, our environment is getting worse, and our political leaders are divided. We need a leader who can unite all Americans, including Democrats, Republicans, and independents, to address the problems facing us.This is why I support Senator Barack Obama. He is the only candidate who is capable of inspiring different groups of people to work together to solve our nation�s problems. When I see Senator Barack Obama excite the American public with his message of unity and change, I am reminded of my father Dosan. My father was a national leader of integrity and purpose who inspired and led the Korean people to fight for independence from Japanese imperialism in the early 1900s.
